What's really going on behind the news. Is all our current anxiety due to exaggerated fear mongering, or overly negative pessimism? Or is there perhaps some reality being avoided or denied by the masses. This author believes we are in a world war. The War of World Views. While the war of worldviews is a subplot of most physical wars in history, technology and globalization has intensified this war exponentially and increasing the likelihood of another physical world war.
Layered behind our warring world views are forces and drivers that influence all of daily life. We have gone from the birth of computing to Artificial Intelligence in just 50 years. AI is taking us into a future with potentially severe ramifications. We are seeing systems integrated across boundaries and borders. This integration is multiplying the very vulnerability we discovered in the 2007-08 Global Recession. This integration will continue, even if nationalistic fervor occasionally creates a lag in its progress. Technology has connected the world forever, and barring a complete failure of electrical capacity, we will continue the global merge and potential meltdown.There is no one who can tell us for sure where this will take us. However, science and simple mathematics can tell us that it is impossible for a global population of over 8 billion people to consume and create waste at the scale of current industrialized societies. Nor can our planet endure this hardship as increasing natural catastrophes seem to warn.
What shall we do? What steps can we take to find a new path for our world and it's occupants. Only when individuals with diverse world views can walk the path to coexistence will peace be secured. This path is not complex but very difficult because we must be willing to embrace a value higher than winning. A value that leads us to coexistence without compromise. Most people would think that humanity’s and our planet survival should be such higher value, yet here we are. A world moving toward an ugly end, and most people ignoring it.
Some people and organizations that appear concerned about the future of the world are spending all their activist energies in the wrong places. They march, attending rally's where there hear preachers affirm their fears and rail against politicians, countries, companies or other narrowly focused and tangible players. Some take action by defacing historical treasures or interrupting human events they find superficial and in denial of the emerging global challenges. However, these efforts will never overcome the forces of greed, denial and power that are shaping our unknowable future.
The answers to a global society come down to the mindset of the individuals within that society and their ability to pursue the greater good of their own free will, verses through the coercion of authoritarian rules and rulers.
Until something captures the greater consciousness of humanity our human nature with all its selfishness and pride will rule global outcomes. Welcome to life on Planet Gel-O, a world of wobbly.
